10th November 2007

Our October/November trip to Karumba in the FNQ and Karumba Point Sunset Caravan Park. What a trip.

We had left Victoria a month before and after making our way up the coast to Cairns we thought we would have a look at Karumba and Karumba Point Sunset Caravan Park. The park had been recommended to us by friends who stay there every year.

Before we left I asked around regarding the road conditions and got some very different reports. However, I am pleased to say the roads are great. Tar sealed all the way. Took us only 9 hours to go from Cairns to Karumba and that  was with careful driving with a stop for lunch at MT Surprise. Fantastic scenery of the outback especially at this time of year. Saw lots of roos and some emus and plenty of free range beef. You do have to keep your eye out for cows as they do free range along the road in various sections.

While I think of it, when you get to Mt Surprise stop at the Mobil Gas Station on your left hand side as soon as you come into Mt Surprise. Great tucker and the lady who runs the place gives excellent service and is a real nice woman. Great corn, beef and pickle sandwich.

We got to Karumba at 5pm and went straight to Karumba Point Sunset Caravan Park which is right on the sea with the boat ramp 150 yards away.( You can pull your tinny to it by hand if you have a set of small jocky type wheels). Booked into a really nice Villa and then headed for the pub a short walk of 300 metres up the road to the Sunset Tavern. A good pub. You can get good tucker and get a bet on the TAB and the beer was cold.

That night we had a great sleep. No noise a good bed and a few beers previously did the job. Next morning we were up early and into it.

We had our own tinny so didn't need to hire one which you can do. You can also go on half and full day trips on a charter boat. You just pay per head and it is a very reasonable cost. Lots of other things to do like scenic flights, river croc spotting, crab and croc tours, beach fishing, bush walks and a lot more. Make sure you check out the Barra Farm.

Anyway, we set off in the old tinny all baited up and headed out to an area called the sand island. Man what fishing. Caught 3 big Grunter, 3 Salmon and a few others that I don't know the names of. We will be eating fish for the next 2 weeks. Does not get better than this.

The people running the park were very friendly and helpful and this would be the cleanest park I have ever stayed at. Toilets were spotless and kept like it all day. The weather was superb and the birdlife amazing.

We were going to stay a couple of weeks but ended up staying a month. Will be going back in March to catch me a Barra. I think this place Karumba must be the best fishing and outback destination in Australia.

I think Karumba Point Sunset Caravan Park is the best Park I have been to. Also thanks to Rick and Michelle (the Managers of the park). You really helped us enjoy our stay.

This park is right on the point at Karumba. The sunsets, fishing, scenery is fantastic. Never seen fishing like this before. In the park they even have their own fishing tables. Thanks for the memories. Janet and Larry Gilmore. Qld.

RE: Site 25

Dear Sir.

Having just stepped down as Commodore of a very large club on the west coast I appreciate the complications that can arise when dealing with the public.

I therefore would like to sincerely thank you in the way that you handled our arrival on Monday 16th. June 2008.

This has left my wife Wilma and myself with great memories of your lovely caravan park and Karumba itself.

Yours Sincerely

Brian Johnson
