Sunset Caravan Park is opposite to the Norman River Entrance
Karumba Point Sunset Caravan Park is opposite the river entrance & centrally located to the pub & the supermarket & a café
A short 70km drive north of Normanton, we arrived at Karumba which is situated on the mouth of the Norman River, on the southern end of the Gulf of Carpentaria. We stayed in the Sunset Point Caravan Park (dogs allowed) which is opposite the river entrance & centrally located to the pub & the supermarket & a café.
The population of Karumba is only 500, but with 180+ sites in the park we stayed in, we estimated the number would at least triple in the peak season (June – September). Primarily a fishing town, the port here also services the local zinc mines & live cattle export.
Karumba township consists of a small supermarket, pub, butcher, baker, post office, police station and pharmacy – all within easy walking distance of the caravan park. There is also a mechanical and marine workshop, a fuel outlet, a library, and the bowls and golf club are close by. Karumba Point has a small supermarket, a tavern with Pokies, TAB, cafe, and fish shop and Karumba Point Sunset Caravan Park has a takeaway service, Pizzas and a shop with clothing, food, souvenirs and other essentials. We have all you need at the point.
The caravan park was full of tourists from different regions of Australia who come up here with their tinnies for 2-3 months of the season & fill their freezers with fish such as blue salmon, bream, mackerel & jew fish to name a few.
The barramundi season closed. There’s a barramundi farm in town that has been established to replenish the local fish populations in the rivers & reservoirs both here & throughout the region.
Park management booked fishing charter. We went for fishing and caught Salmon and Spanish Mackerel!. First trip he caught a couple of nice Spanish Mackerel which made a delicious lunch. Second time he caught 6 blue salmon between 8-22 kilo, 2 of which we kept, 2 we gave away to fellow campers & 2 were returned to the sea 🙂
Park Cafeteria is a great Queensland Cafe with great views over the Gulf, which is especially good at… you guessed it – sunset! They also have great meals.
BOOK NOW! for November, December, and January. You may also do advanced booking for February, March, and April.
