Situated on the Gulf of Carpentaria, Karumba is a tiny town of just 600 permanent residents. Known as the ‘Gateway to the Gulf’ this place is well known by Queenslanders for its legendary fishing. From here you can easily access the Gulf itself as well as many of Western Cape York’s remote rivers, including the Norman River which flows from the south-east corner of the Gulf of Carpentaria to the sea. With over 100 rivers, dozens of estuaries and countless creeks flowing into the different oceans and seas of coastal northern Australia, it makes the area the best fishing destination on earth.
