Recent Karumba Road Works

New Road Construction commenced – Normanton to Karumba.

Construction has commenced on a $5.098 million project to improve access at a floodway and rehabilitate the pavement on the Burke Developmental Road at Corduroy Creek, 3 km north of Normanton.

The two townships of Normanton and Karumba are linked by 71 km of sealed road.

The road generally has poor flood immunity due to it crossing the Norman River catchment and an extensive network of tidal flats, including Corduroy Creek.

The aim of this project is to reduce annual flooding closure times at Corduroy Creek. This will be achieved by raising the height of the floodway.

Once complete, the new floodway across Corduroy Creek will have a similar flood immunity as the other major creek crossings along this link between Normanton and Karumba and provide a more efficient transport environment for freight transport industries and traffic.
